Kedarnath Reopening: Date and Muhurat Finalised on Mahashivratri

According to Harish Gaur, Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, the date and time for reopening were decided on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri.

The decision was taken at the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath - the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. Religious scholars and temple priests calculated the muhurat (auspicious timing) after performing rituals and studying the Hindu panchang (calendar).

The temple gates will open at 8:00 AM on April 22, 2026.

The ceremony announcing the date was attended by Kedarnath’s chief priest Rawal Bhimashankar Ling, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, Temple Committee Chairman Hemant Dwivedi, senior officials, religious leaders, and hundreds of devotees.

Char Dham Yatra 2026: Complete Opening Schedule

With Kedarnath’s reopening date confirmed, the schedule for the four sacred shrines of Uttarakhand - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — has been finalized as follows:

• Yamunotri: April 19, 2026

Situated at an altitude of approximately 11,755 feet, Kedarnath is among the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and holds immense spiritual significance.

Due to heavy snowfall and extreme weather during winter, the temple closes around November each year. During this period, the idol of Lord Kedarnath is worshipped at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath until the shrine reopens in spring.

Varanasi: In view of an expected massive surge of devotees during the New Year period, the authorities of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple have decided to suspend all VIP and special darshan facilities until further notice. The move aims to ensure smooth crowd movement and maintain security at one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage sites.

The decision was taken on December 24, according to Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. He said the temple witnesses an extraordinary increase in footfall during the year-end period, making it impractical to provide special access or priority darshan to any category of devotees.

Only Jhanki Darshan Allowed

With lakhs of pilgrims expected to arrive in Varanasi every day, the temple administration has decided that only regular jhanki darshan will be allowed for all visitors during this time. Jhanki darshan allows devotees to have a brief glimpse of the deity, ensuring that a large number of pilgrims can pay their respects without overcrowding the sanctum.

“Given the sharp rise in the number of devotees around this time of the year, it is not possible to offer special darshan facilities. The decision has been taken purely in the interest of safety and efficient crowd management,” Mishra stated.

Crowd Control and Security Measures Strengthened

To manage the heavy influx, the temple administration has put in place a series of crowd-control measures. These include a zig-zag queue system to regulate the flow of devotees and prevent bottlenecks.
