The holy city of Prayagraj is poised to host the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the largest religious gathering on Earth, from January 13 to February 26. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking about the event, remarked, “The Maha Kumbh is going to be held in Prayagraj for 45 days from 13th January to 26th February. There are so many reasons to come to India together asking the Indian diaspora to come to India during this time. First the NRI Day, then the Maha Kumbh and after that the Republic Day, this is a kind of Triveni, a great opportunity to connect with the development and heritage of India.”
Transforming Prayagraj into a Temporary Megacity
For the duration of the Maha Kumbh, Prayagraj will witness the creation of a vast, temporary megacity known as Mahakumbh Nagar. This transient city will accommodate millions of pilgrims through thousands of tents and shelters, including luxury accommodations provided by the IRCTC’s "Mahakumbh Gram." Equipped with modern amenities, the tent city aims to offer a seamless blend of spiritual experience and comfort.
Infrastructure development is in full swing:
Roads and Bridges: Renovation of 92 roads and beautification of 17 key streets are nearing completion. Construction of 30 pontoon bridges using 3,308 pontoons is well underway, with 28 already operational.
Signage for Navigation: 800 multilingual signages (Hindi, English, and regional languages) are being installed to guide visitors. Over 400 have been completed, with the rest ready by December 31, 2024.
Public Utilities: Over 269,000 checkered plates have been laid for pathways. Mobile toilets and waste management systems will ensure hygiene across the Mela area.
