Prayagraj: The ancient city of Prayagraj is gearing up to host Mahakumbh 2025, the worldโs largest spiritual congregation, beginning on January 13, 2025. This sacred festival, held once every 12 years, is expected to draw over 40 crore devotees from across India and the world. The Uttar Pradesh government is making comprehensive preparations to ensure that the event is safe, grand, and spiritually enriching.
The 45-day festival, running until February 26, 2025, will spotlight Indiaโs rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions. Key bathing days, known as โShahi Snanโ (royal baths), are scheduled for:
January 14 โ Makar Sankranti
January 29 โ Mauni Amavasya
February 3 โ Basant Panchami
Transforming Prayagraj into a Temporary City
A large-scale temporary township, 'Mahakumbh Nagar', is taking shape to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. Thousands of tents, including deluxe accommodations at the IRCTCโs 'Mahakumbh Gram', will offer modern amenities in luxury tented villas.
According to government officials, 92 roads are under renovation, with 17 major roads receiving beautification. The construction of 30 pontoon bridges is underway, with 28 bridges already operational to ensure seamless movement across the city.
To assist visitors, 800 multilingual signages (in Hindi, English, and regional languages) are being installed across Prayagraj, with over 400 already completed and the rest to be finished by December 31, 2024.
Technology at the Core
A key highlight of Mahakumbh 2025 is the integration of AI-powered technology. A multi-lingual chatbot, linked with the Bhasini App, will provide real-time information to pilgrims in various languages. This is the first time such advanced technology has been introduced at the Kumbh, reflecting the growing intersection of spirituality and innovation.
Additionally, AI-enabled cameras are being deployed across the festival grounds for enhanced security and crowd management. A dedicated call center has also been established to guide visitors and provide assistance.
Focus on Hygiene and Sustainability
In preparation for the large crowds, over 2,69,000 checkered plates have been laid to create pathways across the sprawling grounds. The government has prioritized hygiene by installing mobile toilets and robust waste management systems to maintain cleanliness throughout the event.
Boost to Local Economy
The festival is already driving economic growth, with local markets witnessing a 25% surge in sales of Mahakumbh-themed merchandise, including diaries, calendars, jute bags, and other products. This boost is attributed to effective branding efforts led by the Ministry of Culture.
High-Level Monitoring by the Chief Minister
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently reviewed the preparations at Mahakumbh Nagar, emphasizing timely arrangements for food, shelter, and medical facilities in light of the cold weather. Separate accommodations for men and women are being set up, and ambulance response times are being optimized to handle emergencies swiftly.
"The governmentโs goal is to ensure that Mahakumbh 2025 becomes not just a religious event, but a global celebration of faith, culture, and innovation,โ said an official from the Uttar Pradesh government.
With less than a month left, Prayagraj is on track to deliver an extraordinary spiritual experience that intertwines ancient rituals with modern advancements.
